In June 2011 I visited Lake Eyre during a rare filling event. A result of the rains during late 2010/2011 which brought major floods to much of the east coast. The Central Australian Deserts normally dry Rivers were also in flood but the event is drawn out over months as the headwaters spread out over vast areas of desert, eventually reaching Lake Eyre and beginning the transformation from shimmering salt Lake to Inland Ocean.

In June 2011 I visited Lake Eyre during a rare filling event. A result of the rains during late 2010/2011 which brought major floods to much of the east coast. The Central Australian Deserts normally dry Rivers were also in flood but the event is drawn out over months as the headwaters spread out over vast areas of desert, eventually reaching Lake Eyre and beginning the transformation from shimmering salt Lake to Inland Ocean.
It is something I have always wanted to witness and it was worth the wait.
To reach the incoming water was a 3 kilometre walk from the Sand Dunes, across progressively wetter salt plain. Being winter the water was icy cold. Temperatures overnight drop below zero! I set up my tripod in about 20cm of water and waited for the sun to set. The only sign of land was behind me otherwise for 270degrees it was pure mirrored reflecrion The sky became the earth and the Earth Sky in a magically disorienting way.
There is a sense of space like no other. Everything in everything and nothing at the same time.
